"Mommy, can you sing 'Twinkle Twinkle Little Star' to me?"
"Sure, bug. Twinkle, twinkle little star, how I wonder what you are. Up above the world so high, like a pizza in the sky --"
"No! It's not a pizza, it's a diamond."
"Oh! Oops. Okay, let me try again. Twinkle, twinkle, little star, how I wonder what you are. Up above the world so high, like a diamond in the ocean..."
"No! It's not the ocean, it's the sky."
"Ohhh. Silly me! Okay. Up above the world so high, like a diamond in the sky...twinkle, twinkle little tomato..."
"No! It's a star!"
"Oops! Okay, let me try one more time. Up above the world so high, like a diamond in the sky...twinkle, twinkle little star, how I wonder what you are."
"Can I sing it to you now?"
"Sure."
"Twinkle, twinkle, little star, how I wonder what you are. Up above the world so high, like a pizza in the sky..."
"No! Silly girl. It's like a diamond!"
"Up above the world so high, like a banana in the ocean..."
"Wait, what? That doesn't make any sense!"
"Up above the world so high, like a tomato in the...mirror..."
"Well, this song is getting ridiculous."
"Up above the world so high, like a diamond in the sky, twinkle, twinkle little...strawberry! How I wonder what you are."
One of the the things I treasure about my children is the space they keep open for pure silliness. I hope we're always this effortlessly playful.
