Rabbit basks above that old remembered world, rich, at rest

On the first day of this new semester, I gave my juniors a copy of John Updike's poem "Ex-Basketball Player." Upon returning home, I learned that John Updike died today, at the age of 76.

Rabbit at Rest is still raw in my mind -- that one went straight to my core. I was telling my students today that I really think he'll be remembered right alongside Fitzgerald and Steinbeck someday.

What art offers is space - a certain breathing room for the spirit. -- John Updike
